Back on Track

October 20th, 2008 | Category: Personal

So my moving "schedule" is back on track. The electrician came back with a much-reduced quote to do the work. This is a great thing. Hopefully the work gets done quick and I can start moving very soon.

I upgraded my computer with another 2GB of RAM, and it does make a difference. Stuff loads up quicker, and since I disconnected and reconnected everything the peripherals seem to be working a lot better. The external hard drive alone is picking up instantly rather than taking forever to start up.

I’m going to have to look into internet for the new apartment nearer to the time that I start to move. I want to have basically no down-time for the internet. I want to be up and running as soon as I walk in the door.

That’s all I can rant on right now, if I come up with anything later on I’ll post a double.

Delays

October 18th, 2008 | Category: Personal

So…it looks like my moving to the new apartment is going to be delayed some. The electrician came back with a bid of $3000 to do the work we were estimating it would take $1500 or so to do.

Also, I really can’t use my laptop much anymore since the screen issue hasn’t been fixed yet and now parts of my keyboard aren’t working properly. Stupid laptop.

I’ll try to post something more substantial later on tonight after work.

The Week from Hell

October 09th, 2008 | Category: Life,Personal

Yup. It’s true. I’ve had an absolutely horrible week.

First off, my laptop seems to be doing worse than ever. I’m tempted to print out everything for the next D&D game I run just so I don’t have to move the damned thing. Unfortunately, I need it for Tommy’s campaign because all my sourcebooks and character sheet are in it.

Next, on Monday, my external hard drive started having a spat with my tower. Now it’s almost impossible to get the damned thing to register as connected, while it works on the laptop fine.

Tuesday, I decided to hell with it and called Verizon up because I was fed up with my phone acting up. There were portions of the screen which were incredibly difficult if not impossible to get to register a tap/touch on. I went up the Verizon store in the mall and had the i760 replaced with an XV6800. I’m actually sorry that I didn’t get this phone in the first place. The screen isn’t squishy like the Samsung’s was, it’s a tad lighter so it’s easier to hold up to my head, and it registers finger touches a lot better than the Samsung ever did.

So, I drive home. All’s well. I play around with the phone for a while, before having to take my brother to an orthodontist’s appointment. The engine starts making a funny clanking sound. I thought, "Hmm, not good, but it’s still running, so I should be able to worry about it when I get home." I sit in the parking lot there for about 10 minutes, he comes back out, and I go to start the car again. This time I hear a loud chunking noise, it sputters for a minute, but kicks to life. "Hmm," I thought, "that’s not good at all." But I drove home, and it seemed all right. The clanking in the engine had stopped, so I thought everything was all right and something had got misaligned or whatnot and it fixed itself.

Boy was I wrong.

I decided (and this was probably the best thing I had done that day) to shut the engine off once I got home, let it sit for a minute, and try to start it again immediately to make sure it was all right. I turn the key and….nothing. Only a whirring sound. I tried about 5 times to try to get that damned car to start, and it wouldn’t.

So yesterday I had it towed to a local service station. My dad had listened to it and said it was either the starter or the solenoid that went. The service station guy said it might have been the flywheel and that he wouldn’t be able to fix it if it was.

This morning I get the call from the service station. It (thankfully) was only the starter, so I told him to go ahead and replace that as well as to do the work that needs to be done to it (tires, brakes, a wheel bearing) so that I could get the thing inspected. Around 3 or so I get the phone call that it’s ready.

All in all, that car cost me $1032 to have repaired. Nearly a quarter of what I got it for. I gave it a kick for good measure.

Then, today, trying to take Emmie home, I discover that she left the internal light on in the backseat for 3 hours and that the battery’s dead, so it won’t start. LOVELY. I had to borrow my mom’s van to take her home and run to Wal-Mart.

I just hope the rest of this week doesn’t suck as bad as it has so far.
